Wednesday Youth Chess |
|
|
We meet Wednesdays at the Tomball College and Community Library, off highway 249 (north of Tomball), on the campus of Tomball College, from 4:30 to 6:00 PM. We meet in the Children’s Activity Room. We use tournament standard chess sets. Clocks are available for timed and speed games. Generally we play with no time limits, though most players get in three to six games in a meeting. Ages range from 6 to 17 (and adults and college students are welcome to help out). There are no fees. We do have a club ladder and ranking and badge system, with points, special stickers for the badges, and certificates earned for various chess accomplishments. We draw mostly new to intermediate players who want to learn more about the game and to have fun playing in an informal setting. We follow USCF rules, including touch-move, with some consideration for inexperienced players. When we draw more than 20 players (usually in the summer), we often divide into sections by rating or ability. We play as many rounds as we can get in by 6:00 PM. We also have tactics puzzles, a club library of chess books and DVDs for borrowing, and other tools for helping beginning and intermediate players (USCF rating 100 to1500). Contact van.a.piercy@nhmccd.edu, or 281-401-1814, if you have questions. |
